#PaintTheVoid: I spent the afternoon photographing the dozens of murals that artists have painted in the last week in on plywood used to board up businesses along a ten-block stretch of Broadway in Oakland in the wake of protests calling for Justice for George Floyd. One of the artists, Jonathan, who has been out painting 10 hours a day for the last 6 days, and helping to amass supplies and support for other artists, told me “There’s the frontlines [the protests] and this is the backlines. It is a different way to scream. I heard someone say that artists are second responders. People keep asking where and what we are ‘allowed’ to paint. I tell them, what are we NOT allowed to do? We are past the point of asking for permission.” THANK YOU OAKLAND ARTISTS for this beautiful act of love and solidarity!! If I shot your mural, but you don’t see it here, there is larger set of photos is up at facebook.com/movementphotographer. I tried to gather as many artist handles as possible: @cececarpio @trustyourstrugglecollective @panchopescador @chicano_eyes @kilimunoz @draizn_nthasun @girlmobb @aikbrown @deredwrk @c.gazaleh @jackpot0706 @deadeyes_ptv @pkaf_510 @studionoiroakland @thetracypiper @kid.films @freshcoastphotos @matleyhurd @fgprintdesigns @jonathandelong .
